A general AI chatbot knows a little about everything and is confidently wrong about Australian tax more often than you'd like. A specialist agent does one job, works from the facts on your client file, and is built for Australian law. That difference matters when the job is your BAS, your capital gain or your trust's distributions.
BPAG Accountants works exclusively on Nagaris, and through Ask Nagaris we use more than 80 built-in specialist agents. Below is every one of them, grouped by the job it does, with a plain sentence on what it means for you. First, the rule that applies to all of them.
How do AI agents work at an accounting firm?
Each agent is a specialist skill. It reads what is already on your client file (transactions, last year's return, documents, emails, meeting notes), applies the rules for its topic, and produces a draft: a workpaper, a calculation, a checklist, a letter.
Then the draft stops and waits.
- The agent drafts. It can't send an email, change a record or lodge anything on its own. Every change and every email it prepares waits for a person's approval.
- A qualified accountant reviews. They check the facts are right and complete, test the numbers, and apply judgement the agent can't, such as what you actually intend or what you haven't told us yet.
- The accountant signs off. Only then does the work go to you, the ATO or anyone else. Every action is timestamped, so there's an audit trail.
- Your accountant advises. Where a decision needs making, a person explains the options and the trade-offs.
Key point: AI output is a starting point for a qualified accountant's review, never a substitute for it. Our accountants, a mix of Chartered Accountants and CPA-qualified accountants, carry the professional responsibility, as the Tax Practitioners Board's guidance on AI and the Code of Professional Conduct expects.
Which AI agents handle bookkeeping and BAS?
These do the heavy lifting behind your books and your BAS. The work they take off a person's desk is the reason your accountant has time to look at what the numbers mean. See our BAS and GST services and Xero bookkeeping.
| Agent | What it does | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| BAS engine | Drafts the BAS workpaper from your Xero data (BPAG's own process) | Your BAS starts from your actual transactions, not a spreadsheet someone retyped |
| BAS pre-lodgement check | Catches GST coding and label errors before a BAS is lodged | Fewer amended BAS and fewer surprises from the ATO later |
| Post-BAS review | Scans the numbers after lodgement and turns unusual movements into questions | You hear about a jump in costs or a drop in sales while you can still act on it |
| Transaction coding | Suggests account codes and GST for unreconciled bank lines and drafts questions for the unknowns | You get one short list of genuine questions, not a pile of "what was this?" emails |
| Bank statement to CSV | Turns bank statement PDFs into reconciled, import-ready files | Old or missing periods can be brought up to date without manual keying |
| Credit card statement to CSV | Turns credit card statement PDFs into checked, import-ready files | Card spending gets into the books properly, so deductions aren't missed |
| Transaction list to CSV | Formats a pasted list of transactions into an import-ready file | Whatever format your records are in, we can use them |

| List reconciliation | Matches two lists by name or ABN and shows what's missing from each | Supplier, customer or payroll lists that don't agree get sorted quickly |

Which AI agents help with estate planning and life events?

| Agent | What it does | What it means for you |

Which AI agents help with client letters and communication?
The aim is simple: you get clear answers in plain English, and nothing you've told us gets lost.

|---|---|---|

| Firm branding | Applies our logo, colours and fonts to documents and files | Everything you receive from us is consistent and easy to recognise |
What can't the agents do?
Plenty, and we'd rather say so.
- They don't know what isn't on file. If you sold a property and didn't tell us, no agent will find it. Your accountant asks.
- They don't make judgement calls. Whether an expense is genuinely for your business, or which structure suits your family, is a decision for a person who knows you.
- They don't take responsibility. Your BPAG accountant does.
- They don't replace a solicitor or a financial adviser. Legal documents are prepared by a solicitor; financial product advice comes from a licensed adviser. We brief and work alongside both.
- They can be wrong. That's why every draft is reviewed. Rates and thresholds change, so anything that affects your result is confirmed against the official source.
On privacy, your client file sits in Nagaris, which stores client data in Australia on AWS Sydney servers, is ISO 27001 certified and timestamps every action. The OAIC's guidance on privacy and commercially available AI products sets out sensible questions to ask any firm that uses AI, including us.
How do I get these agents working on my affairs?
You don't need to ask for an agent by name. Become a BPAG client and the right specialists are used on your work as a matter of course, under your accountant's review. Read what an AI-native accounting firm means for you, compare our fixed-fee packages and pricing, or contact us to book a free strategy call.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use these AI agents myself?
The agents run inside Nagaris, the practice platform our firm uses, so you don't log in to them. You get their output through your accountant: a reviewed BAS, a checked CGT calculation, a signed-off letter. That's deliberate. The value is in the agent and the accountant together, not the agent alone.
Are the agents' answers tax advice?
No. An agent's output is a draft and a starting point for review. Advice comes from your BPAG accountant once they've checked the draft against your facts and the law. If you see something from us, a person has approved it.
How were the agents tested?
They were tested on real client work at our own firm, where 54 of our people used Ask Nagaris nearly 2,000 times in two weeks. Separately, Nagaris tests the major AI models on 112 Australian accounting questions and sends each question to the setup that does best, publishing the results as the Nagaris AI Accounting Index.
Do the agents know Australian rates and thresholds?
They're built for Australian accounting work, including federal tax, super and each state's taxes. Rates change every year, and some change mid-year, so your accountant confirms any rate or threshold that matters to your result against the official source before relying on it.
What happens to my information when an agent works on it?
The agent works from your client file in Nagaris. Nagaris stores client data in Australia on AWS Sydney servers, is ISO 27001 certified and timestamps every action, so there's a record of what was done and who approved it.
Does using AI agents make my fees lower?
Our fees are fixed, not hourly, so we don't price AI as a discount. It changes what the fee pays for: less time keying, chasing and formatting, more time from a senior accountant reviewing your numbers and advising you.
